Spanish villa to rent: What are the Extras?

A villa rental in Spain, whether for a short or long term holiday, is a fabulous option for both large and small groups. In fact, if you can afford it and are looking for complete peace and privacy, a small villa with its own private pool or beach would be ideal. However, as a cost-sharing option, the villa option is one of the best deals going. Apart from rental sharing, you can also share the chores, cost of transport, split the costs on food, entertainment and also get to spend quality time with the people you are most comfortable with, whether it's family or friends. The other advantage with villa rentals is that there's fun for all age groups, whether it's seniors or toddlers. People with special diet or mobility restrictions can also be accommodated.

One of the main things with a villa rental is to thoroughly research the available options before finalizing. Preferably go with a provider who is reliable, reputed and/or has been recommended by a trusted source.

Generally, the terms of contract are clear but with regard to extras, most first-time travelers are confused. Unless otherwise mentioned, the rental includes the whole villa and the cost of utilities like electricity, water and gas and are calculated for a minimum duration. If you're opting for a shorter stay, there may be a surcharge.

Most service-providers charge a refundable damage deposit. This covers damage to the villa and its contents. Another deposit which may be charged is the usage charges: this is for extra usage of utilities based on meter readings etc and is finally deducted from your deposit. For instance, pool-heating, central heating or warm air-con. This could be based on fuel rates which are variable.

Linen is not usually included and may be charged according to actual use. Extra beds and deck loungers may be charged. Traveling cots, cribs, high-chairs, fans or camp-cots are another option which may be charged – all these are usually based on a weekly-hire rate. Some villas provide a starter-kit option for people who arrive on late flights and have no time to visit the supermarket.

Extra cleaning on request, laundry, chef and chauffeur services, tour guides are charged. Another hidden charge that many villas levy is the call-out charge: this means that if you want any amendments to your original requests, you have to essentially pay for anything not previously ordered. Even extra change of linen can attract the call-out charges, so ensure that you stick to your original contract.

If you have pets, check whether they're allowed and what the extras are.

Reading the fine print in your rental contract should be done at leisure – it could make all the difference between a dream holiday and a nightmare trip!
